Bathroom Remodel Cost Estimator

Cost of a full bathroom or powder room renovation at three finish levels.

sq ft

Results update as you type. The maths runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Before you order: get three written quotes on identical scope. The spread between the cheapest and dearest bid on the same job is routinely 30%, and it costs nothing to ask.

Bathrooms cost more per square foot than kitchens, and the reason is density: plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tile and ventilation all converge in 40 square feet, and every trade has to wait for the one before it. There is no way to parallelise the work the way a larger room allows.

A powder room is the exception. With no tub, no shower and no waterproofing membrane, cost drops by roughly 40% against a full bath of the same size — which is why a powder room conversion is one of the better value projects in a house.

How this calculator works

Every field is editable and the result updates as you type — nothing is submitted anywhere, all the maths runs in your browser. That matters for a number you are about to spend money on: you can see exactly which input moved the answer, and by how much.

What this calculation assumes

Assumes the existing plumbing stack stays put and the subfloor is sound. Hidden rot, failed shower waterproofing or a cast-iron drain replacement will push the final figure up sharply, and none of that is visible until demolition.

Treat the result as an order-of-magnitude check rather than a final quantity. Product packaging changes, regional labour rates vary by a factor of two, and no calculator has seen your actual site.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a bathroom so expensive per square foot?

Because cost scales with the number of trades and fixtures, not floor area. Moving a toilet two feet can mean relocating a drain line inside a joist bay, which is hours of skilled labour for almost no visible result.

Can I keep the existing tile and just replace fixtures?

Yes, and it saves 30 to 50%. The catch is that new fixtures rarely match old tile cuts, so you need the same footprint exactly. If the existing tile is sound and the layout works, this is the highest-return version of the project.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

A cosmetic update takes 1 to 2 weeks. A full gut takes 4 to 6 weeks, with tile and waterproofing curing times as the hard constraint — membrane and thinset need to cure before the next layer goes on, and rushing that is how showers leak.
